Official information: Azerbaijan is a country located almost entirely in Asia (Western Asia), although a small part of it lies in Europe, which is why it is listed under both Asia and Europe. Like Russia, Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, and Iran, Azerbaijan borders the Caspian Sea. After the fall of the Russian Empire in 1918, the Democratic Republic of Azerbaijan was proclaimed. The Soviet Union annexed the country again in 1920. Azerbaijan only regained its independence after the Soviet Union's collapse in 1991. The country is ruled autocratically, and serious human rights violations occur almost regularly. Women and minorities are oppressed in Azerbaijan, freedom of expression is severely restricted, and government critics are persecuted and imprisoned. Thanks to its relatively large oil reserves, Azerbaijan experienced strong and rapid economic growth. It is one of the six independent Turkic states. With an average elevation of 384 meters, Azerbaijan ranks 98th. Its lowest point is at -28 meters and its highest at 4,466 meters. |
