  Official information:
Finland is a parliamentary republic in Northern Europe. The Finns have been a member of the European Union since 1995 and, as a direct result of the Ukraine War, a member of NATO since 2023. Finland borders the Baltic Sea.

With approximately 5.5 million inhabitants in an area almost the size of Germany, Finland is one of the most sparsely populated countries in Europe.

Finland was part of Sweden for centuries, but in the 18th century it increasingly came under the influence of the expanding Russian Empire and was incorporated into it in 1809 as the Grand Duchy of Finland. After the overthrow of the Russian Tsar and the October Revolution of 1917, Finland succeeded in seceding from Russia, which was sealed by the Finnish Declaration of Independence on December 6, 1917.

With an average elevation of 164 meters, Finland ranks 139th. The lowest point is 0 meters and the highest is 1,328 meters.

  Personal information:
A one-day workshop in Helsinki brought me to Finland for the first and so far only time. Arriving the day before and departing the following day, I had the opportunity to explore Helsinki a bit.

I remember Helsinki Cathedral, Uspenski Cathedral, and Esplanade Park well. The highlight, however, was Temppeliaukio Church, built into the stone, where a concert was taking place.

It felt quite chilly for mid-August, and I didn't see anyone swimming in the Baltic Sea...

I can't really imagine a proper vacation in Finland (Scandinavia), although I would make an exception for Lapland.
