Official information: The United Kingdom of Great Britain (and Northern Ireland) is located in the British Isles and is the largest island nation in Europe. The United Kingdom is a union of four countries: England, Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland. The British Empire, which existed under the rule of the United Kingdom from the 17th to the 20th century, was the largest colonial empire to date. With the beginning of industrialization in the 18th century, the United Kingdom developed into the first industrialized nation in Europe, and indeed the world. The United Kingdom is a founding member of NATO and the United Nations. It is also a nuclear power and one of the G7 countries. From 1973 until its (misguided) withdrawal in 2020, it was a member of the EEC and later the European Union. With an average elevation of 162 meters, Great Britain ranks 140th. The lowest point is -4 meters and the highest is 1,345 meters. |

Personal information: First, a few personal notes before I discuss Brexit: I've been to Great Britain countless times, both privately and professionally, and I've enjoyed the country... ...apart from the left-hand traffic that England has spread around the world, the mediocre English food at best, and the perpetual rain on the island. I worked in southern England for almost two years for work, and I did experience a few weeks of nice weather, but unfortunately, it was mostly miserable rain. I also had short stays in Chester, near Manchester. But even as a young adult, I visited Scotland with InterRail and was captivated by the country and its people. I've also been to the island several times for vacation; whether that will happen again after Brexit remains to be seen! This brings us to the topic – Brexit: In my view, far too many compromises were made to Thatcher during Britain's integration into the EU. The payments to the EU were demonized there, and all the benefits were always concealed. The best example was later Prime Minister Johnson with "his" bus, with the slogan "We send the EU £350 million every week," followed by: "Let's fund our NHS instead." All well-known lies that nevertheless resonated with people. I remember a taxi driver in 2015 with very bad teeth who was full of Brexit supporters. How stupid, because many of his passengers were "foreigners" – and if they suddenly stopped leaving, his business would go down too... |
