Official information: Guatemala is a Central American country that, like many Central American nations, borders both the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans. From 2010 onward, the country drifted to the right for several years, transforming from a fledgling democracy into an autocracy that teetered on the brink of dictatorship. Nevertheless, the social-liberal opposition candidate Bernardo Arévalo was elected president and sworn in in 2024. With an average elevation of 759 meters, Guatemala ranks 45th in the world. Its lowest point is at sea level, and its highest is at 4,220 meters. |

Personal information: I travelled from San Salvador to Guatemala City in a spacious tour bus. The journey was long, and after arriving at the Radisson Blu Hotel, exhaustion finally won out. I spent the night there and paid a fortune for a student. As a result, I moved to a much cheaper hotel the next day (in what I later learned was an unsafe area). Sightseeing was definitely lacking during my few days there, but I met some nice young people with whom I spent my nights partying in trendy nightclubs. Overall, I had a very positive experience, and if it's ever possible, I would gladly visit Guatemala again (with the full tourist itinerary!). |
