Official information: Ireland, also known as the Republic of Ireland, is an island nation in Western Europe. It comprises approximately five-sixths of the island of Ireland, as well as several smaller islands. Although Ireland borders Northern Ireland, it shares an official border with the United Kingdom, to which Northern Ireland belongs. The largest city, Dublin, is located in the east of Ireland and is also the capital. For a long time, Ireland was a country of emigration (many emigrated to the USA), but it has since become a modern nation with a multicultural, industrial, and service-based society. Ireland is a member of the European Union. With an average elevation of 118 meters, Ireland ranks 147th in the world. Its lowest point is at sea level and its highest at 1,041 meters. |
