Official information: Kazakhstan is a country located in Asia (Central Asia) and Europe (Eastern Europe). As the ninth largest country in the world, it covers an area of over 2.7 million square kilometers, reflected in its borders of approximately 7,600 kilometers with Russia and 1,800 kilometers with China. Kazakhstan lies on the Caspian Sea. Its approximately 20 million inhabitants are predominantly Muslim Kazakhs. In 1925, the Kazakh Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic was founded, which merged into the Kazakh SSR as a union republic in 1936. With the collapse of the Soviet Union, the country became independent in 1991 as the Republic of Kazakhstan. Kazakhstan is ruled autocratically, exhibits high levels of corruption, and has a critical human rights record. Following large-scale protests in 2022, which were suppressed, the country is cautiously moving towards further reforms. With an average elevation of 387 meters, Kazakhstan ranks 97th. Its lowest point is at -132 meters and its highest at 7,010 meters. |
