Official information: The Kingdom of Cambodia is a country in Southeast Asia. In 1863, Cambodia came under French rule and later became part of French Indochina. Cambodia gained its independence in 1953 and remained a prosperous and conflict-free country until the military coup of 1970. This was followed by civil war and, from 1975, the brutal rule of the Khmer Rouge. The Khmer Rouge were finally overthrown by Vietnamese forces in 1979. Currently, Cambodia is a very poor country and is governed by an authoritarian regime. With an average elevation of 126 meters, Cambodia ranks 146th in the world. Its lowest point is at sea level and its highest at 1,810 meters. |

Personal information: In 2009, during my extended holiday in Thailand, I also visited Cambodia, including Siem Reap and the nearby Angkor Wat temple complex, as well as the Ta Prohm temple complex, famous from Tomb Raider. Both are fabulous and well worth seeing. The extreme poverty was palpable. I even saw boys being made up and groomed by their parents for pedophile clients, which really disturbed me. At the moment, I don't feel particularly drawn to Cambodia, so a return is unlikely. |
