Official information: Since 2019, the country has been officially called the Republic of North Macedonia. From 1991 to 2019, its official name was the Republic of Macedonia, established after the breakup of socialist Yugoslavia. North Macedonia is a landlocked country, partly located within the territory of the historical region of Macedonia. North Macedonia has been a candidate for EU membership since 2005 and a member of NATO since 2020. There was initial resistance from Greece regarding the name of Macedonia, which blocked further integration into Europe. After the name change to North Macedonia, Greece was willing to cease blocking North Macedonia's accession negotiations with the EU and NATO. With an average elevation of 741 meters, North Macedonia ranks 47th in the world. Its lowest point is at 50 meters and its highest at 2,764 meters. |
