Official information: The Philippines is a country consisting of a chain of 7,641 relatively closely situated islands (an archipelago) in Southeast Asia. Presumably due to the large number of islands, the population comprises very diverse cultures and/or ethnic groups. With the arrival of Magellan, the country was colonized by Spain and remained under Spanish rule for 300 years. After a very brief period as a republic, the Philippines were controlled by the United States and only gained independence after World War II. Since then, democratization has been quite inconsistent, with various presidents governing the country. With an average elevation of 442 meters, the Philippines ranks 83rd in the world. The lowest point is at sea level and the highest at 2,954 meters. |

Personal information: In January 2016, I spent three weeks in the Philippines. Angeles in the north was quite nice, but the tourist infrastructure was a disaster, so I couldn't rent a car to explore Vigan and other small towns. Bohol, with its tarsiers and the Chocolate Hills, was great. Boracay, with its White Beach, was a dream, and El Nido had a touch of adventure. I also spent some time in Manila at the end of my trip. I didn't have much contact with the Philippines, but I'd love to come back for the islands and volcanoes, even though the food wasn't exactly delicious after the long period of Spanish and American rule. |
