  Official information:
El Salvador is a country in Central America, bordering only the Pacific Ocean. It is the smallest country in Central America and is roughly the size of the German state of Hesse.

El Salvador lies in an earthquake zone, and the country is divided into different regions by a number of volcanoes.

From 1980 to 1991, El Salvador was ravaged by a civil war that claimed approximately 70,000 lives and caused billions of dollars in destruction.

With an average elevation of 442 meters, El Salvador ranks 84th in the world. Its lowest point is at sea level, and its highest point is at 2,730 meters.

  Personal information:
I'd wanted to take a trip to Central America for a long time, and I owe my actual trip to El Salvador to my friend Gerson, whom I met during my student days. And so, I found myself in San Salvador from Mexico. The moment I stepped off the plane, I was hit by the sweltering 30°C (86°F) and 100% humidity.

Back then, shortly after the civil war, there was almost no foreign tourism in El Salvador, so I was glad I had the best guidebook: I was able to experience volcanoes, volcanic lakes, Pacific beaches, coffee harvests, and much more up close.

Even then, crime was very high, and it's likely increased significantly since then. I've lost touch with Gerson, so a return to El Salvador seems rather unlikely.
