Official information: San Marino is considered the oldest existing republic in the world, having existed since 301 AD thanks to wise decisions regarding potential territorial expansion. San Marino is completely surrounded by Italy. San Marino is one of the six European microstates and the fifth smallest internationally recognized state in the world. The capital is the city of the same name. San Marino is a member of the United Nations (UN, but not the EU), although it has nevertheless adopted the euro. Based on nominal GDP per capita, San Marino is one of the richest countries in the world (excluding national debt). With an average elevation of 450 meters, San Marino would rank 81st with Venezuela, but is not included in Wikipedia. The lowest point is 55 meters and the highest point is 739 meters. |

Personal information: On the way to Rome, I spent a night in San Marino. That evening, I had a delicious meal and met some nice people. The next day, before continuing south, I visited the impressive tower(s)/fortress in a strong winter wind. San Marino is too small for a whole vacation, but I'd gladly come back for a stopover! |
