Official information: Turkey is a so-called unitary state located in the Middle Eastern Anatolia region and in southeastern European Eastern Thrace, and thus belongs to both Europe and Asia. The country borders both the Mediterranean and the Black Sea. About 20% of the population lives in the Istanbul metropolitan area; if you include the other seven million-strong cities, the rest of the country is rather sparsely populated. The country's average altitude is also impressive, considering its access to two seas: at 1,132 meters, Turkey ranks 25th. Turkey has been officially a candidate for EU membership since 1999; whether it will ever join is another story. It should also be noted that the country's founder, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, initiated a modernization of Turkey – with an eye on Europe – introducing social and legal reforms and even replacing the Arabic alphabet with the Latin alphabet. |

Personal information: From 2009 to 2011, I visited the Mediterranean coast of Turkey three times during the spring season, naturally because of the pleasant warmth and favorable off-season. Pamukkale and Cappadocia are, of course, a dream, and the Mediterranean was also pleasant. I even saw a hurricane on the sea once. In 2009, I found the entire country to be relaxing and a beautiful vacation destination. Unfortunately, my impression worsened in 2010 and 2011, so I decided against further trips (although Istanbul is still on my list): the vendors and traders were rather uninhibited and rude, and the hotels were only focused on maximizing profits. The red line was definitely crossed in a hotel on the Mediterranean: upon arrival after a bus ride, water bottles were slapped out of my hands, bringing your own water was forbidden, and I was told to buy drinking water at the hotel. |
