  Official information:
Turkey is a so-called unitary state located in Anatolia in Western Asia and Eastern Thrace in Southeastern Europe, thus belonging to both Europe and Asia.

The country borders both the Mediterranean and the Black Sea. Approximately 20% of the population lives in the Istanbul metropolitan area; if you include the other seven cities with over a million inhabitants, the rest of the country is relatively sparsely populated.

Since 1999, Turkey has been an official candidate for EU membership, but whether it will ever actually join is another story.

It is also worth noting that the founder of the republic, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, initiated a modernization of Turkey—with an eye toward Europe—introducing social and legal reforms and replacing the Arabic alphabet with the Latin alphabet.

The country's average elevation is also impressive, considering its access to two seas: With an average height of 1,132 meters, Turkey ranks 25th in the world. The lowest point is at 0 meters and the highest at 5,137 meters.

  Personal information:
From 2009 to 2011, I visited the Mediterranean coast of Turkey three times during the spring season, naturally because of the pleasant warmth and favorable off-season. Pamukkale and Cappadocia are, of course, a dream, and the Mediterranean was also pleasant. I even saw a hurricane on the sea once. In 2009, I found the entire country to be relaxing and a beautiful vacation destination. Unfortunately, my impression worsened in 2010 and 2011, so I decided against further trips (although Istanbul is still on my list): the vendors and traders were rather uninhibited and rude, and the hotels were only focused on maximizing profits. The red line was definitely crossed in a hotel on the Mediterranean: upon arrival after a bus ride, water bottles were slapped out of my hands, bringing your own water was forbidden, and I was told to buy drinking water at the hotel.
