Official information: Ukraine is a country in Eastern Europe. In terms of land area, it is the largest country in Europe. Including Russia as a whole, it is the second largest country in Europe. It borders the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov (a marginal sea of the Black Sea). Its origins lie in the medieval Kievan Rus', after whose decline in the 13th century the territory of Ukraine was alternately part of various other kingdoms. Ukraine was one of the founding members of the Soviet Union in 1922. It was only after the collapse of the Soviet Union that Ukraine became sovereign in 1991. Russia's aggression led to the annexation of Crimea, and since 2022, Russia has been waging a war of aggression against Ukraine. With an average elevation of 175 meters, Ukraine ranks 136th in the world. Its lowest point is at sea level and its highest at 2,061 meters. |
