Official information: Vatican City is a microstate, both in terms of its population (just under 1,000) and its area (0.44 km² – rounded to the nearest 1 km²). Furthermore, it is the only state (even though Latin can be used extensively in German) that has Latin as its official language. Because of these characteristics, it is also referred to as a microstate. Vatican City is the only state in the world completely surrounded by a city (Rome), and thus, as an enclave, entirely enclosed by Italy. The state is an absolute elective monarchy, whose monarch is the Pope. The Pope is elected by the cardinals and usually only leaves office upon death or, rarely, through resignation. With an average elevation of 61 meters, Vatican City ranks 159th in the world. Its lowest point is at 19 meters and its highest at 78 meters. |

Personal information: Well, some devout Catholics might be a little envious, because I've already visited Vatican City twice. But Vatican City wasn't my primary destination, of course; I was in Rome twice, and anyone in Rome should definitely visit Vatican City. Once with a booked tour, avoiding long queues, and another time in winter without a pre-booked ticket. St. Peter's Basilica and St. Peter's Square, where there's a huge nativity scene at Christmastime, are truly breathtaking. St. Peter's Basilica is superlative in terms of the size of the dome, the sculptures, and so on. In short: Highly recommended! A must-see at least once in your life. |
