  Official information:
Vietnam is a coastal country in Southeast Asia. Its capital is Hanoi in the north, while its largest city by population is Ho Chi Minh City (formerly Saigon).

In the 19th century, the territory of Vietnam became part of French Indochina. During World War II, the region was conquered and occupied by Japan. Between 1946 and 1954, France attempted to regain control of the country through the First Indochina War, but this failed. This defeat resulted in a divided Vietnam: socialist North Vietnam and South Vietnam, supported by Western powers. The United States also failed to defeat North Vietnam in the Vietnam War between 1964 and 1973. The consequence of this failure was (fortunately) the reunification of Vietnam.

With an average elevation of 398 meters, Latvia ranks 95th. Its lowest point is at sea level and its highest at 3,144 meters.

  Personal information:
I spent four weeks in Vietnam from mid-February to mid-March. The itinerary was quite structured: from north to south.

I started in Hanoi, where it rained on and off and was quite chilly at times. But Hanoi is a charming capital city with a vibrant atmosphere. Since I was already in the north, I had to visit Ha Long Bay, which I did with three days of cruising (maximum temperature 22 degrees Celsius, with clouds and fog).

After that, I took a night bus to the imperial city of Hue and then further south to Hoi An, the city of a thousand lanterns. It's a must-see!

I continued by night bus to Nha Trang, then flew to the idyllic island of Phu Quoc. After soaking up plenty of sun, I took a Mekong River cruise and then arrived in Ho Chi Minh City for the final leg of my journey.
... I met many friendly and nice people (to name just one: our tour guide Hanh in the infamous tunnels), ate delicious food, saw a lot, and was thoroughly impressed.

I'd love to come back!
