Official information: Egypt is a country in northeastern Africa, bordering both the Mediterranean and the Red Sea. The Egyptian capital, Cairo, is the largest metropolis in Africa and the Arab world. Egypt's large population gives it significant political and cultural influence in the Arab and Islamic world. From a civilizational perspective, Egypt has been important. As early as 3000 BC, ancient Egypt was home to one of the earliest advanced civilizations and a long period of pharaonic rule. Power struggles have long plagued Egypt. The protests of the Arab Spring reached Egypt in 2011, followed by the political crisis of 2013/14. Egypt is one of the few countries in the world whose territory spans more than one continent. While 94% of Egypt's land area lies in Africa, the Sinai Peninsula, comprising approximately 6% of its territory, is located in Asia. With an average elevation of 321 meters, Egypt ranks 110th in the world. The lowest point is at -133 meters and the highest at 2,629 meters. |

Personal information: A two-week vacation in 2013 took me to Egypt quite spontaneously, after the Arab Spring and just before the political crisis. The first week was a Nile cruise, during which we stopped at many sights and cultural highlights. The historical heritage here is incredible and truly inspiring. Because it was the off-season and the crisis, I had many of the sights almost entirely to myself (well, that's a bit of an exaggeration, but not far from the truth). One temple was even a bit crowded; I don't even want to imagine what it must have been like during peak season with packed tourist areas. A drive through the desert to Abu Simbel, a visit to the Aswan High Dam, and Aswan itself rounded out the trip. I can highly recommend the Nile cruise. Afterwards, I spent another week relaxing on the beach in Hurghada. The wind was sometimes quite brisk, the resort was okay, but the Russians with their poor manners were a nuisance. I would visit Egypt again without hesitation! |
